great news, dudes!

we just went into the studio to record a cover of Harden My Heart by Quarterflash for this really rad compilation called Let It Rain. It was put together by the fine folks at Oregon Historical Society and PDX Pop Now! in conjunction with the OHS exhibit Oregon Rocks!. It's getting released with a party on Sunday, February 19th at the Oregon Historical Society building and Kelli Schaefer, Ancient Heat and Napalm Beach will be playing! Atole will be spinning in between sets and for just $10, you get in and get the CD too!

we also recorded a new song, Into Minutes, that we'll be releasing sometime soon. It's sounding prettyprettyprettygood and we're so excited to have you all hear it!

finally, we've got a couple of shows lining up next month, one of which will be at PALS Clubhouse (our favorite house show venue!) with Ghost Animals (on tour from eastern Washington) and Asteroid M! last time we played a house show at PALS, sara ended up covered in mud and bruises and beer, so don't miss it!

we'll be announcing a few more shows and more exciting news in the very near future.

PDX Pop Now! 2011

Hey friendos - awesome news! Our new song, The Trend, will be making its official debut on the PDX Pop Now! 2011 compilation!!!

We're super honored and excited to be included alongside the likes of the Jared Mees and the Grown Children, The Minders, The Ascetic Junkies, Living Proof and all the rest of the talented bands on the comp.

My Old Kentucky Blog gives you a sneak peak at the comp with a stream of The Trend on their website and here's a little of what they have to say:

"Joining such past PDX Pop Now! Compilation CD and festival notables as The Decemberists, M. Ward, Sleater-Kinney and The Shins, is The Angry Orts. With their feverish, hook-heavy beat, cracker-jack drumming and a biting vocal evocative of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Karen O, these feisty Portland whippersnappers dig in and don’t let go. Nor would you want them to."

Monterey County Weekly Review

Monterey County Weekly published a lovely review/preview for our show at Jose's Underground Lounge on Tuesday, April 5th:

On Tuesday, The Angry Orts will pick up where General Bye Bye leaves off. Singer Sara Hernandez and her drummer husband, Matthew, have an indie-rock matrimony that echoes Yo La Tengo’s Georgia Hubley and Ira Kaplan: They found a common ground in music and expanded on their relationship from there.

“He keeps me sane; we get along super well and are able to talk about any issues the band is having,” Sara says. “The other two guys in the band were a little skeptical when we first met, but they’re really cool with it now.”

Fueled by the voice of Hernandez – an apparent kindred spirit of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O – the foursome placed second in the Best of Portland’s Emerging Artists in 2010.

“We R Electric,” the opening track on the Orts most recent, self-titled LP, is a festive, hook-heavy anthem that pulls threads from both ’90s alt-rock and ’80s new wave. But the key ingredient that keeps you listening over and over again is the complex rhythm led by guitar and percussion.

The final track on the album, “Kiite Kurikaeshite,” is a testament to the quartet’s work ethic and may be a foreshadowing of where they will take their music next.

The title, which means, “Please listen and repeat” in Japanese, came to bassist James Puryear when he was taking Japanese lessons. The phrase became an ideal reoccurring theme for the song, which took the band nearly six months to complete. The result is a sweeping and sentimental acoustic ballad that sounds like Neko Case touched it.

“It’s different from anything else we’ve done,” Hernandez says. “It was a labor of love and very personal to me.”

Sara's Lemon Basil Currant Cookies

Want to impress your friends with your mad kitchen skills and your ability to pair unusual but delicious ingredients? Make these (super easy) cookies:

1/4 cup melted butter
8 oz cream cheese, softened
1 egg yolk
lemon zest
1 tbs lemon juice
1 package lemon cake mix (I prefer Betty Crocker – it’s not as sweet as others)
1-2 tbs basil, finely chopped
dried currants

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Cream the butter, cheese, yolk, zest and juice (I use the highest setting on my KitchenAid mixer and the whisk attachment). Once the mixture is light and fluffy (similar looking to homemade whipped cream or icing), slowly add cake mix 1/3 at a time. Hand mix the last 3rd, as to keep dough light and fluffy. I find it easiest to remove the dough from my KitchenAid bowel and knead in the last 3rd by hand, like bread dough. Once dough is completely mixed, add basil and currants (I usually put the dough back into the mixer and do this with the whisk attachment).

Grease your cookie pan and drop small, teaspoon-sized dollops onto the pan. Cook for 15-18 minutes or until cookies are very lightly browned on top. Remove from oven and allow cookies to cool.

Now go out and awe your friends with those delicious cookies, damnit.

Check it yo: we placed #20 in Redefine Magazine's 90 Notable Album Covers of 2010!!! How cool is that?!? We beat mutherfucking Yeasayer AND Les Savy Fav! And we don't even have label money to pay some over-charging artsy mutherfucker to come up with some "concept" that "expresses our music in a visual medium". All we could do was scrape up a modest amount of money and then beg the coolest artist we knew to make us a kick-ass cover. (Alas, Kanye West still kicked our ass, but he's crazy and we don't fuck with crazy.)

Check out the whole list here:

Also, since we really didn't do anything other than say "OOOOOOH... PRETTY", I turn your attention to our excellent and amazing artist, Miss Amanda James:

This art will melt your brainz

Thanks so much to Amanda, without whom we would have had an album cover that we made in Paint... and not in a cool way.

Last night, we got this email:

"Please come to the other side of the country some time so I can see you play. You are easily one of my favorite bands of all time and fall in a class all your own. Your voice is absolutely unbelievable. I listen to your songs constantly and have to say thank you for existing. The whole band is phenomenal."

Our little hearts swooned and then fell into a deep depression when we realized we didn't even know who it was that wished to court us. Reveal thyself, sweet pillow talker and set our hearts a-flutter once more!

Whew! Tour was so amazing and exhausting and crazy and fun - so sad to be home and so glad to be home at the same time!

Thanks to everyone who came out to support us (both knowingly and unknowingly) and to all of the bands and venues who were so hospitable and sweet the entire time, even though we were sometimes smelly.

Special people thanks goes to:

The Klamath Falls Hernandez family for graciously putting us up for our first night of tour and feeding us a delicious breakfast before helping us fix the van's gas line.

Emily Coleman for the wonderful Sunday spent wine-tasting and eating cheese and having an all around lovely time in Philo. We are so glad we met you and that you actually wanted to be our friend. We didn't ever want to leave/we wanted to pack you in our suitcase.

Alicia and Daniel for coming out to the show at the Ruby Room and for convincing people to come along with you to s show for a band they've never heard of and for buying us all shots at the end of the night!

The Los Angeles Hernandez Family for braving the traffic of LA and the phosphoric acid smell of TRiP just to see us rock for 35 minutes - you guys are the best.

Nanette and Tom in Chico, who fed us a delicious dinner and put us up for our last night of tour - and even let us swim in the pool in the morning. Love you!

Sara's parents, who drove all the way from Portland to Chico just to be at our last show - you guys are total dorks, but we love you anyway.

Special venue thanks go to:

The Caspar Inn for putting us up and feeding us delish dinners two nights in a row.

The Crepe Place for an amazing dinner (one that had Aaron go into a 'crepe-coma' in the back of our van), unbelievable drink tickets and a show that totally blew our brains out.

The Ruby Room for the delicious and much needed tequila shots when we wandered in, haggard and smelly, from the streets of San Diego. You made our day

We can't wait to get back on the road and will be keeping you all up to date on the tour we're planning for the spring time (hello SXSW!!!) and on all of the shows we have scheduled in between!

We feel so lucky that we're able to go on tour and see so many awesome places and people - hopefully we'll be able to do it more and more often in the future!

Love always and forever,

And you are seeing it--right now! Also, get ready to party at the Mississippi Street Fair this Saturday. It's the biggest street fair in all of Portland, all year. Last year 30,000 people showed up. That's like all of Klamath Falls (holla!) on a few blocks of one street at one time. It's going to be fun times, guaranteed. In fact, if you don't have fun at the MASF (miss. av. st. fair) I'll give you all your money back. (Ha, it's free, sucka!) Don't forget the sunscreen, and we'll see you at 3:30 Saturday.

OK, so I just spent a grueling/pleasurable seven hours mastering the upcoming album with Portland mastering guru Ryan Foster at FREQ mastering studios. I am glad to report the album will undoubtedly melt your face off, and leaving you (in all probability) permanently crippled. Before leaving the studio I immediately downed two shots of Johnny Walker to celebrate and destroyed a small pinata. I was so tuckered out from the experience I had to run home and hold my chihuahua Ricardo "Pepe" Montalban.

Much love to the Ort fans

We love it. We live for it. Snacking, and snacking well, is a lifestyle in this town. We at Holocene are letting Portland's two favorite things, great food and great tunes, collide for an evening....and we expect delectable results! The tunes will be provided by synth poppers Wampire and utterly cuddly folk rockers St. Frankie Lee. DJ Brokenwindow of Community Library will be playing a set of 100% food-themed songs to set the mood for snacking. Come watch a live demo on making delicious vegan enchiladas by Guidance Counselor! Sign up with a partner for the DoubleDare-style poutine eating challenge, sponsored by that most beloved fry cart, Potato Champion! Experience cookies baked by your favorite local bands (The Angry Orts, White Fang, Breakfast Mountain, Reverse Dotty, Ocean Age, Blue Horns, DJs New Moon Poncho, Fleshtone, St. Frankie Lee and more), and see which cookie takes the prize....the epic panel of judges will be none other than your favorite orchestral pop ensemble: Typhoon!
GRRRRRRZ! (Thieves are Jerks)

We've got some news that makes us want to beat somebody up - hence the GRRRRRRZ.

This weekend, while we were in the process of moving to a new home, our old house was broken into (by total jerks) and some of our gear was stolen (both PA speakers, both mixers, 2 guitars, and various mics/cables). We called the cops (they even sent a fingerprinter!) but it looks like the possibility of getting our gear back is pretty slim.

LUCKILY, all of the gear was insured, so we'll be getting new stuff here pretty quickly, even though we have to pay a big old deductible (THANKS AGAIN, DIRTY THIEVES!). And even MORE LUCKILY, all of the gear we regularly use for shows was already at our new home, so we're still going to MELT FACES on January 9th at Backspace.

Even though we're going to get our gear replaced, everyone we walk by now looks like they might be the dirty thief who took our gear (even the little old ladies with eyeglasses and canes!) and we don't like it! This is terrible!

The moral of the story: Don't steal from us or we will cry big salty tears of sadness (and then we will proceed to break your kneecaps as those tears are drying).

Love always,

Just two corrections to the info on the podcast:

One: It's The Purple Rhino Squad versus The Blue Whale Super Heavy Assault Troops (not Purple Rain Squad... Prince may be a sex machine, but some Purple Rain just isnt as badass as an angry, charging Purple Rhino)

Two: We ARE going to be hitting the studio again, but it won't be to record Summer Haircut (that track is already available FOR FREE AT OUR WEBSITE so head on over and get your sunshine on). We are heading into the studio to begin recording tracks for our upcoming album!

Finally: if you'd like to become part of our super-wow-awesome email list (you'll be the first to get news about show and tour dates, the new album, any fun free downloads) send your name and email address to info@theangryorts.com with "Mailing List" in the subject line.

Or just keep reading, cause we totally posted it below.

Excerpt from Bitch Magazine:

'With a name that demands you grab a dictionary and an album that sounds like a Mad Libs fragment, Portland, Oregon's The Angry Orts shape your first impression with a feint, a false expectation of liberal-arts playfulness. And then they disabuse you of this notion with the scorching, Sleater-Kinney-esque "Avoiding My Eyes". Indeed, the band has an uncanny ability to cobble together disparate but familiar sounds into a seamless whole. It's a group effort, finding the door out of a house of pigeonholes, but the key that opens it is singer Sara Hernandez's chameleonlike voice.

Sure, on their full-length debut, bassist James Puryear and drummer Matthew Hernandez comport themselves admirably, thumping out the rhythm on Blink-182-style numbers and keeping it subtle on quiet ones, and guitarist Aaron Ettlin switches nimbly between Jack-White-flavored freakouts and slowcore atmospherics. But the way Hernandez channels Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano on one song ("Granville Island") and Belle and Sebastian-era Isobel Campbell on the next ("Vyvyan"), wielding a panoply of deja ecoute weapons, is simply astounding.

Lyrically, The Angry Orts do hew close to the double-yellow cliche/redundancy line ("The leaves are changing again/So I will be leaving my friend" is followed, two tracks later, by the title "Leaving"), but you hardly notice details like these when the sounds they concoct elsewhere are so mesmerizing.

Big party! 3821 SW Plum Street, in Portland. 10/10/09. 8:00. We've got a song for you that's so new it doesn't even have a title and we'll probably screw it up. Regardless, it'll be the most rockin'est ort song we've made in a while. You should come out, have yourself a beer from one of the kegs, and enjoy some chit chat. See you there.

Just finished making our sweet blog extra sweetly RSS compliant. Anyone nerdy enough to know what that means can find our feed at
http://www.theangryorts.com/includes/ort.xml
Stick that in your aggregator and stay up to date with whatever it is we think is important (probably ourselves) or just check the website. Anyone know how you get that little orange RSS thing to show up in the address bar?
